How do I meet with the counselors?

You can meet with the counsellors by dropping an email to student.counselling@lums.edu.pk and stating your request. You will receive a response within 24hrs. You will also be asked to read and sign a 'consent and confidentiality' agreement form (which you can also discuss with your designated counsellor), in addition to filling a short questionnaire designed to capture clearly whatever symptoms of distress you might be feeling.

How many sessions do I get?

The average number of sessions given to each student falls under 6 to 12. However, keeping in view the differences and uniqueness of each case under question, the total number of sessions can vary and can be discussed with your counsellor. This is done in order to ensure maximum quality and student satisfaction.

What to do incase I feel another student /friend needs help?

You can always bring to their awareness the services and accessibility provided by CAPS. In any urgent case, you can contact CAPS on the given website or helpline number, and we will do our best to get in touch with the student.

In what situations can Academic withdrawals happen and what is the process?

Academic withdrawals are provided for students at anytime during the semester who are unable to cope with the academic stress due to their mental health condition. In such a case the student petitions for withdrawal at the OSA and meets with the counselors on campus. The counselor makes an assessment of the student’s condition and sends forward the approval of petition if warranted.

What are all the services provided by the counselor?

Counsellors provide services via online options as well as in person therapy. In certain cases, counsellors are also available via phone call. We also have a service called 'ask CAPS' where an email can be dropped by a student concerning any academic or interpersonal problem they may be facing, and they will receive a reply from one of the counsellors the same day.

What does therapy look like?

Therapy consists of different ranges and approaches and, depending on the presenting complaints and symptoms, a collaborative approach is undertaken where different therapy treatments and options are discussed between the counsellor and student. The student will then be in position to choose treatment best suited to his/her needs.
